Sodium Citrate – Chelator & Soap Scum Reducer
Sodium Citrate is a multifunctional ingredient widely used in soap making and personal care formulations. As a chelating agent, it binds metal ions to improve formulation stability, enhance cleaning performance, and slow the growth of microbes. In soap, it plays a critical role in softening water, reducing soap scum, and improving lather—especially in areas with hard water.
Whether you're looking to improve the quality of your bars or replace citric acid in a formulation, Sodium Citrate is a must-have ingredient for serious soap makers.
Benefits in Soap Making
-
Reduces Soap Scum: Binds calcium and magnesium ions to prevent residue
-
Improves Lather: Enhances foam performance, especially in hard water
-
Enhances Texture: Contributes to smoother, more consistent soap bars
-
Acts as an Antioxidant: Helps prevent Dreaded Orange Spots (DOS) during curing
-
No Lye Adjustment Required: Can be used without altering your lye calculations
Usage Guidelines
-
Use Rate in Soap: 0.5%–3.9% of total oils
-
1.9% recommended for standard water
-
Up to 3.9% for hard water
-
-
When to Add: Dissolve in water before adding lye
-
Water Adjustment: If using 3.5% or higher, use a minimum of 30% water relative to total oil weight
Citric Acid Conversion
If your recipe calls for citric acid, substitute with sodium citrate using the following conversion:
-
1% citric acid = 1.9% sodium citrate (19g per kg of oils)
-
2% citric acid = 2.9% sodium citrate (29g per kg of oils)
-
3% citric acid = 3.9% sodium citrate (39g per kg of oils)
